Over 90% of Your Visitors Leave Without An Email Opt-In
What if you could reach that visitor anywhere on the Internet and remind them of your
upcoming product or book launch, to opt-in to your email list, and purchase products they viewed?
It’s reality. And it’s called retargeting.
What is Retargeting?
Have you visited an ecommerce site like Zappos or Amazon and saw ads for those same products displayed while you were browsing news sites or Facebook? That’s retargeting.
Retargeting places a tracking cookie on your site visitors and allows you to segment the visitors based on their actions (visited specific blog post, added product to cart, completed sale, etc.)
Then you can serve targeted ads on Google and Facebook to get your visitors to come back to your site. These “retargeting ads” usually have high ROI (2x – 8x) because you are only targeting people that already know your brand.
Why is Retargeting Important For Authorities?
Think about how quickly you browse the internet.
You are like a spaceship speeding through outer space and flying past all these planets (brands). Most of the time you slow down only enough to see one article and then continue speeding through outer space (the internet).
After passing by the same planet (brand) a few times you might find their content compelling and you decide to orbit them and subscribe.
In the same way your audience is like spaceships speeding by your planet (brand). Over 90% of your visitors never take any action on their first visit and they may never come back.
You can use retargeting to increase your brand’s gravity pull and keep more customers in your orbit.
That means more email opt-ins and more product sales and staying “top of mind” for your audience.
Aren’t email autoresponders enough to increase my audience engagement?
Email autoresponders are effective tools, but miss a significant portion of your audience.
What about casual visitors who are familiar with your site but haven’t signed up for the email list yet?
If your email opt-in rate is 10% that means 90% of site visitors aren’t on your email list.
People are busy and don’t read some (or all) your emails. How many email lists are you signed up to that you don’t even read?
Authority sites can use retargeting to reach over 95% of their past visitors (on Adsense, Facebook, OpenX, and other networks) with display ads.
These retargeting ads work synergistically with your email campaigns to:
1. Convert more Casual Visitors into Email Subscribers
2. Increase Product Sales from Visitors and Subscribers
3. Instantly notify past site visitors of book or product launches
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need you to manage retargeting on an ongoing basis?
Banner blindness is a huge problem for retargeting. Your visitors get used to seeing the same ads repeatedly and over time the ads lose effectiveness. Click-through-rates decline and cost per conversion goes up. Facebook ad performance decreases significantly after 5 – 10 days without changing ads.
This is “banner blindness” in action:
In just 17 days the CTR had declined 45% from running the same ads without rotation.
That means in just over 2 weeks the cost-per-click of ads doubled.
You can’t just “set it and forget it” with retargeting. It’s critical to adjust campaign bids, regularly pause underperforming ads, and create new test ads every week to keep a high CTR and low cost-per-conversion.
How much will the retargeting ads cost?
In general most of my clients have seen cost-per-clicks between $0.40 – $0.80 but it depends on your business, how you target visitor segments, and the effectiveness of your ads. More effective ads = lower costs-per-click.
Total ad spend will depend on how many visitors you have and what percentage of them are available to target on Google/Facebook. Most of my clients have an ad spend of $1500 – $3000 in their first month.
How will I know you aren’t just re-signing up my existing email subscribers?
At the start of the retargeting campaign I set up a special exclusion list to stop serving ads to people who opt-in to your email list.
In my experience 80%-90% of the email subscribers who opt-in from retargeting ads are brand new subscribers. In email marketing software like Mailchimp, Office Auto Pilot, or Infusionsoft you can tag these incoming opt-ins as “retargeting” and see if they were a previous subscriber.
Will I be stuck in a long-term commitment?
The contract is month-to-month and you can cancel at anytime.
How much work is it for me?
I take care of all tracking, campaign creation, list setup, banner and text ads and email opt-in pages.
After that I provide weekly reports to keep you updated with progress and results and no further input is needed from you.
