What is Retargeting?

Retargeting places a tracking cookie on your site visitors and allows you to segment the visitors based on their behavior on your site (visited certain page, add to cart, complete sale, etc.)

Then on any site with Google Adsense you can serve those visitors targetted ads to get them to come back to your site. These “retargeting ads” usually have high ROI (2x – 8x) because you are only targetting people that already expressed interest in your products.

How To Start Your Visitor Retargeting List Today In Google Analytics

FYI Google calls retargeting, “remarketing” but they are the same thing.

You will need Google Analytics and Google Adwords accounts.

Make sure your Analytics and Adwords accounts are linked (how to)
If needed, update your Analytics tracking code HTML (how to)
In Google Analytics go to Admin -> Remarketing -> Lists

Create a list for All Site Visitors with duration 180 days (the maximum allowed). Select your linked Adwords account.

And now your site visitors will be added to your Google Remarketing list so you can later target them with a display ad campaign. Google needs a minimum of 100 visitors on your list before you can serve ads. I would recommend you have at least 1000.
